We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking individual, to join the Histopathology team at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI).
Dumfries & Galloway has a population of 150,000 people covered by approximately 175 General Practitioners who all access the laboratories. Histopathology operates a Monday to Friday working week and processes approximately 15,000 histology specimens.
The post holder will : -
- Contribute to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the Department of Pathology.
- Perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
- Be responsible for own work and use specialist training to operate complex equipment and solve problems.
- Acts as a mentor to and participate in training/supervision of Healthcare Science Support Workers.
- Applicants must have a flexible approach to work.
- An increasing part of a medical laboratory service is compliance with regulatory bodies, such as UKAS. You will be required to assist in helping the department in maintaining its accreditation status with such bodies.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, self motivated Trainee or Specialist Biomedical Scientist who holds or willing to work towards HCPC registration. The post holder must also hold or willing to work towards a Specialist Portfolio or have equivalent substantial post qualification experience in a NHS Histopathology laboratory. An IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree is essential for this post. The candidate must have excellent organisational skills, be driven for independent learning and have a positive attitude to change.
Candidates with accredited degrees but require HCPC registration will be directed through the portfolio and Annex 21 is applied at band 5.
HCPC registered with no specialist portfolio (or pending) - Band 6 Annex 21 would apply in such circumstances, and the successful candidate will be required to complete the relevant Specialist Diploma via self-directed learning and in-house training.
For trainees covered by Annex 21 where the period of training lasts for between one and four years, pay will be as follows:
- up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;
- more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate of the qualified;
- more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.
- more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate.
Applicants must have previous experience of working in a NHS diagnostic Histopathology laboratory environment and must possess good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Other essential skills are accuracy and attention to detail, as well as having the ability to work as part of a team.

As from 1st April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will be reducing from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part time hours will be reduced pro-rata. However, there will be a corresponding increase in the hourly rate so that pay will not be affected.
