Consultant Dermatologist
We would like to invite applications and expressions of interest from candidates seeking to find their niche in a forward thinking department. Lanarkshire has demonstrated its innovative style over the years, now well established as one of the leaders in active clinical referral triage within Scotland. This allows the department to actively return almost 60% all urgent suspicion of cancer referrals back to the referrer and copied to patients with advice letters. This has been achieved with high quality images including dermoscopy, ensuring effective maintenance of skin cancer waiting times, well under many other boards in Scotland.
Lanarkshire has a wealth of pathology, which will allow anyone seeking to expand their knowledge in Medical Dermatology to thrive. There are close links with both general paediatrics and regional paediatric dermatology with opportunities for setting up sub specialty clinics. Lanarkshire provides consultant led surgical training with excellent links with Plastic surgery, and access to a shared Mohs service within Forth Valley.
Embedded within our service are three Dermatology pharmacists along with specialist nurses which allows a multidisciplinary team approach, and offers an excellent opportunity for a new appointee to help shape the service. Successful candidates will be encouraged to pursue a subspecialty interest. Part time working would be welcome. Well established consultants seeking to make a change will be well supported and job plans agreed commensurate with the experience of the successful candidate.
The department has a strong history of research with excellent research nurse support available. It is linked with the West of Scotland registrar training scheme and resident doctor training reports remain excellent, with the department providing a nurturing environment to allow growth, and support e-portfolio requirements and opportunities. Liaison with Glasgow, Forth Valley and Dumfries and Galloway allows for varied regional CME with local Governance programmes. With the prospect of Scotland’s first technological hospital in the Monklands Hospital Replacement Programme currently ongoing, opportunities are available to innovate the service, with plans to include space for a dedicated Mohs service in the new build.
Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the 1 PA for Non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), Medical Education, Research & Development, acting as an Appraiser, etc. Applicants who are able to demonstrate a commitment to any of the above or other areas and wishing to commence on more than 1 PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.
The University of Glasgow enjoys close links with NHS Lanarkshire, and our medical students benefit greatly from the excellent educational opportunities provided by the board in both primary and secondary care. Those who are or who will be involved in teaching our students, or in any other activity which involves a contribution to teaching, research or scholarship within the University are eligible for honorary status at the University of Glasgow.
Honorary Status Role Holders are entitled to numerous benefits including a University of Glasgow ID card, use of the Library and other facilities, and a University IT account as required for their role. They have access to all courses run by the IT Services on the same basis as members of staff and are also permitted an educational discount when PC equipment is purchased through the IT Services.
