Position:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine based at Univeristy Hospital Crosshouse. This post is offered on a permanent basis.
Hours:
40 hours per week.
From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.
UK Driving Licence:
A UK driving licence is essential for this role.
What you will do:
We are looking for experienced and motivated Emergency Medicine middle grade staff to provide first line medical care to patients attending the Emergency Department under the direction of the Emergency Medicine Consultants, and to be fully involved in all clinical aspects in the ED including outpatient clinics, whilst progressing towards successful completion of the Portfolio pathway. We are also looking for the successful candidates to be leading departmental QI and development.

There is a wealth of beaches, golf courses, bustling market towns and stunning scenery to explore, yet University Hospital Crosshouse is still within 35 minutes’ drive from the heart of the city Glasgow and University hospital Ayr within 50 mins.
The successful candidate will work as a member of the Emergency Medicine team in Ayrshire and will relate to nursing and medical members of the team and be supervised by one of the Consultants in Emergency Medicine. The main duties and responsibilities of this post include:
- Assessment, treatment and appropriate disposal of patients attending the unit.
- Providing direct supervision of the training grade doctors, including instruction in practical procedures and delegation of routine work in the Department. Leading the department overnight with a consultant on call from home.
- Review of radiology and laboratory reports.
- Assisting and leading with the review clinics held in the Out Patients Department.
- Teaching of the training grade doctors. (The successful candidate will be expected to pass or to have already completed Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Advanced Paediatric Life Support courses.)
- Leading departmental QI projects
The job will be full time 10 PAs with additional EPAs available following discussion. Less than full time working also considered. The 10 Pas will be made up of 8 DCC clinical sessions and 2 SPA sessions, allowing the successful candidate to develop their portfolio and progress towards their CESR. The clinical work will be delivered in a full shift pattern, via self-rostered shifts, including nightshift. Entitlement to holidays and leave is as per the new specialist doctor in Scotland contract. We can be flexible in the way the shifts are self-rostered following discussion, to allow other commitments and opportunities including NGO work.
