The role:
Senior Biomedical Scientists provide both the core technical staffing for the Department and essential support to the lab management team. They work individually and as a team to analyse and validate a broad range of specialist and routine laboratory diagnostic investigations in Haematology/Blood Transfusion and perform a range of administrative duties. The post holder will also be involved in all aspects of change management and will support the maintenance of UKAS accreditation and regulatory compliance.

Shift Pattern - Monday - Friday
Base location - Royal Alexandra Hospital
Key responsibilities:
- Follow all SOPs, quality, safety, risk, and data protection policies.
- Validate, authorise, interpret results; communicate critical findings; recommend further tests.
- Perform routine and specialist tests (including complex antibody work and film reporting).
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and quality‑check lab equipment and analysers.
- Manage workload, samples, reagents, and out‑of‑hours duties.
- Train and supervise staff; assist with audits and assessments.
- Monitor QC, take corrective action, and report non‑compliance.
- Support evaluation of new equipment/methods and contribute to research/SOP development.
- Engage in CPD, appraisals, and professional mentoring.
- Carry out sample reception duties and resolve identification issues.
- Perform decontamination and assist with risk assessments.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent, which is acceptable for Health Professions Council registration.
- Registration with the HCPC is mandatory.
- MSc or fellowship of the IBMS or equivalent.
- Must have extensive post-registration experience in a Haematology/Transfusion laboratory.
- Evidence of continuing professional development, for example, a specialist portfolio of development, attendance at specialist courses, training on new instrumentation and learning through reflective practice.
- Must have in-depth knowledge of laboratory standard operating procedures and NHSGG Policies and Protocols, including Health & Safety guidelines.
- In-depth knowledge of current National and European guidelines.
- Effective written, organisational and verbal communication skills.
- Effective keyboard/IT skills, including laboratory computing procedures.
