Specialist Interest in Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Surgery: Two Full-Time Substantive Posts
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is seeking to substantively appoint two experienced Consultant General Surgeons with a specialist interest in Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Surgery. These posts offer an excellent opportunity to join a well-established and progressive surgical service delivering high-quality care across multiple hospital sites.
Successful candidates will join a well‑established Upper GI consultant team of 3.5 surgeons, with 2.5 consultants based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) and 1 consultant at Inverclyde Royal Hospital (IRH). The team is further supported by a locum UGI Consultant, with plans for this role to become substantive. The service delivers comprehensive elective and emergency Upper GI care across the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and Vale of Leven Hospital.
A proven track record in UGI surgery is essential. Additional expertise in interventional or advanced endoscopy is highly desirable, particularly for candidates who can demonstrate experience in service development and innovation.
Main Duties of the Job
- Participate in the General Surgery Consultant on-call rota (non-resident).
- Provide elective and emergency general surgical services with a specialist focus on Upper GI surgery.
- Deliver elective operating lists, endoscopy sessions, and outpatient clinics in line with the agreed job plan.
- Provide specialist services across Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and the Vale of Leven Hospital.
- Perform core UGI procedures including:
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
- Hernia repair
- Anti-reflux surgery
- Contribute to the Upper GI and OG cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT), including pre-operative planning, operative management, and post-operative care.
- Support service development, audit, quality improvement, education, and training within the directorate.
Indicative Weekly Job Plan
An indicative elective week may include:
- Theatre Sessions:
- 1 all-day operating list per week
- 1 half-day operating list per week
- Endoscopy:
- 1 half-day endoscopy list per week
- 1 half-day ERCP list per week
- Outpatients:
- 1 half-day clinic per week
- Supporting Professional Activities (SPA):
- Admin:
- 1 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week
- Direct Clinical Care:
- 2 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week
- Total:
- 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week
- Including on-call commitment (Availability Supplement currently 5%, but will dependent on rota)
Final job plans will be agreed following appointment and in line with service requirements.
