University Hospitals Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow and Ayr a further 19 miles south. The total catchment population is around 375,000. Funding from Additional Cost of Teaching money has provided this opportunity to continue our commitment to teaching of undergraduate medical students. We wish to appoint a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) in Medicine based at University Hospital Crosshouse (1 post). The post will commence on 5th August 2026 for one year.
The Senior CTF will spend one day per week in clinical practice based in a specialty of their choosing (dependent on availability). The remainder of the working week will be dedicated to medical education and personal development. The roles and responsibilities of the Senior CTF include
- co-ordinating the programme of education for HCP-Med students from the University of Edinburgh,
- supporting the educational programme for University of Glasgow medical students,
- organising the teaching programme for resident doctors in General Medicine,
- organising the NHS Ayrshire and Arran Grand Round programme,
- contributing to NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s education governance structure
- delivering procedural skills courses for resident doctors
There may also be the possibility to work with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for one day per week to support the work of their Professional Skills Education Board.
The post may include some out of hours responsibilities (without nightshifts) attracting a commensurate banding supplement though this is neither mandatory nor can be guaranteed. This will be agreed with the successful candidate before commencing the post.
This post is suited to resident doctors who have satisfactorily completed Stage 1 Internal Medicine Training or who can demonstrate equivalent competencies. Alternatively, the post would suit ST3 trainees and above who wish to seek out of programme- this should be discussed with the Deanery at the earliest juncture. Ideally, the successful candidate will have a strong background in medical education such as prior experience as a Clinical Teaching Fellow and/or a postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Funding towards a medical education qualification for example, a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Medical Education will be made available. Alternatively successful candidates may opt to undertake their own portfolio of development aligned to their personal needs and career aspirations. Where an appointee decides not to enrol in the certificate course in medical education, up to £1,250 will be made available to support funding of personal development activities, which must be agreed with the Clinical Supervisor/Assistant Director of Medical Education.

You will be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed foundation or equivalent training.
If you do not meet the essential criteria which is full GMC Registration with a licence to practice and 12 months paid NHS experience, then you will not be shortlisted for this post
