The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland's water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design. Overview of the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Principal/Associate Process Engineer to join our team to support the delivery of our UK and Ireland clients’ water programmes.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
- Lead process engineering input across feasibility, concept, preliminary, and detailed design for water treatment designs
- Develop and review process designs, including block flow diagrams, P&IDs, mass balances, and equipment sizing
- Analyse operational data to identify optimisation opportunities and improve treatment performance
- Perform process modelling and simulation to support design and operational enhancements
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, proposals, and client presentations
- Check process deliverables for accuracy and compliance
- Engage with clients and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery
- Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering technical growth and team development
- Collaborate with resource coordinators to manage project resources and contribute to recruitment and training initiatives
- Support business development by providing technical input to proposals, tenders, and client strategies
Candidate specification
We are looking for an individual, keen to make a difference in the sector, take wide responsibilities and progress professionally.
Essential:
- Degree in Chemical Engineering or related engineering field
- Chartered Status (CEng) with a recognised Professional Institution
- Proven experience in municipal water treatment
- Strong understanding of conventional and emerging treatment technologies
- Significant experience in developing and delivering feasibility, outline, and detailed process designs
- Demonstrated ability to conduct root-cause analysis and optimise treatment processes
- Excellent technical report writing skills using concise English
- Excellent communication skills for client interaction and team collaboration
- Skilled in reviewing technical deliverables, calculations, and reports Commitment to continuous professional development and staying abreast of emerging technologies
- Willingness to contribute to technical knowledge networks and promote best practice
