Role Title: General Manager
Business Unit: Facilities Management - Small Works
Location: Glasgow, with travel across the UK as required
Role Overview
Galliford Try is seeking an experienced General Manager to provide leadership within its Small Works business, based from the Glasgow office. The successful candidate will have a strong operational awareness and a good understanding of the Commercial aspects of the businesswithin the construction industry and a proven ability to manage a team of Project Managers while providing robust commercial and financial support.
The role is focused on ensuring projects are delivered safely, profitably, and to a high standard, while developing people, driving consistency, and maintaining strong client communication.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Manage, mentor, and develop a team of Project Managers to deliver consistently high performance
- Embed best practice, company standards, and compliance across all Small Works projects
- Promote a strong culture focused on health & safety, quality, collaboration, accountability and compliance
- Establish and maintain excellent communications through all stakeholders
- Ensure consistent project delivery standards, processes, compliance and controls across all projects
- Act as escalation point for operational, client, and risk-related issues
- Ensure strong cost control, forecasting, and margin protection on all projects
- Able to support bid reviews, pricing strategy, and risk assessments for new works
- Promote commercial awareness and accountability within the Project Management team
- Supporting the day to day responsibility for the financial performance of Small Works projects
- Review and manage project budgets, cost forecasts, and CVRs
- Support contract administration and change management
- Support annual forecasting of all business related budgets
- Act as a key senior interface between project teams and the Directors of Galliford Try
- Provide accurate reporting to the Directors of Galliford Try
- Support client relationships and contribute to securing repeat and follow-on Small Works opportunities
About You:
- Strong understanding of construction contracts, cost control, and financial governance
- Commercially astute with strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Willingness and ability to travel within the UK as required
- Proven experience in an operational leadership role within construction or small works delivery
- Strong commercial awareness with a track record of managing margins and financial performance
- Demonstrable people management experience across multi‑site or geographically dispersed teams
- Excellent understanding of project delivery, risk, and operational controls
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels
- Ability to balance strategic oversight with hands‑on operational involvement
Desirable
- RICS or CIOB (or working towards)
- Degree in Construction / Engineering
- Strong NEC and JCT contract knowledge
- Strong commercial and financial acumen
